Redlands Coast celebrates its Busy Bs

The amazing contribution of our “Busy Bs” – birds, bees, butterflies and bats – is being celebrated at Redlands Coast IndigiScapes Environmental Centre to mark Australian Pollinator Week from 11-19 November.

Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said a host of captivating activities, presentations and workshops had been organised to honour the efforts of these champions of our environment.

“Australian Pollinator Week, each spring, acknowledges just how vital our pollinators such as bees, birds, butterflies and even bats are – we simply cannot live without them,” Cr Williams said.

“To raise awareness of their importance and how we can look after them, Council’s IndigiScapes centre has organised a naturally wonderful week of community activities for all ages.

“You can learn more about the special role of pollinators inside the Discovery Centre, play interactive games using the Agents of Discovery app or join craft activities.

“IndigiScapes café and gift shop will also showcase a delectable selection of produce sourced from the hard work of these pollinators.

“If you’d like to make your garden more pollinator-friendly, pop into the nursery and get a special ‘pollinator pack’ comprising six native plants that will support local native wildlife species.”

Australian Pollinator Week festivities at IndigiScapes, off Runnymede Road, Capalaba, will also feature:

9am – Forest Pollinators and Seed Dispersers free film presentation in the theatrette by Martin Fingland of Geckoes Wildlife, courtesy of Sunshine Coast Council and Flying Fox Education.

9am and 10am – Messy Pollinator Play sessions in the botanic gardens with Gumtreekids (fee applicable, registration required).

10am – Native insect pollinator workshop with entomologist and author of Australia’s Incredible Insects Jessa Thurman (free, registration required.)

10.30am – Renowned native bee ecologist Dr Kit the Bee Babette will be buzzing about the centre sharing pollinator insights (free).

11am – Power Pollinators Flying Foxes with Bat Conservation and Rescue Queensland volunteers.

Visitors will have the opportunity to meet an orphaned flying fox (free).

Native plant propagation and botanic garden tour with Nursery Coordinator Ben Webb (Free, registration essential).
