With bushfires burning across Queensland and the summer storm season on the way, Logan City Council is providing additional support to help residents be prepared for many emergencies.
A second Logan’s Big Safe Day Out event will be held later this month at Underwood Park, Priestdale, while workshops to help people living with disability develop tailored emergency plans continue to be rolled out.
Council is also partnering with Healthy Land and Water and the Queensland Fire and Biodiversity Consortium for an online information night about bushfires for owners of properties larger than 10,000 square metres.
Logan Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) Chairperson, Mayor Darren Power, said it was important for residents and businesses to have plans in place before a severe weather event or other disaster occurs.
“When an emergency happens in our community, we all need to work together to protect life and property,” Councillor Power said.
“The recent bushfire threat in Flagstone and surrounding rural areas is a good example of how an emergency can suddenly occur.
“I was pleased to see how engaged residents became by attending a community meeting hosted by QFES and getting advice on how to prepare and stay aware of the unfolding situation.
“Your emergency plan should work for you, your family, pets and property for sheltering in place as well as evacuation if required.”
A well-stocked emergency kit could include battery-operated radios and torches, medication, water, food, important documents, special items for elderly or infant family members as well as pets, and money in case ATMs don’t work.
Agencies including Council, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Queensland Police Service and the State Emergency Service will attend the Logan’s Big Safe Day Out event on Saturday, November 18 from 10am to 2pm.
Division 1 Councillor Lisa Bradley said she looked forward to the event at Underwood Park.
“It’s a good opportunity for the community to seek advice and information directly from people who respond to disasters every day,” Cr Bradley said.
Council’s free Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness Workshops aim to help people living with disability identify their individual health and safety needs during a disaster.
The workshops are presented by people with disability and include service providers and emergency managers.
Upcoming workshops include:
