Recognising the contributions of older Ranges residents

The significant contributions of older residents across the shire have been celebrated through a Seniors Festival event hosted by Council last month.

A total of 21 worthy recipients – nominated by fellow community members for their volunteer service – were recognised, with Council’s Deputy Mayor Jennifer Anderson in attendance to present each recipient with a ‘thank you’ hamper filled with local products.

Nominated residents represented a wealth of volunteering experience and engagement across groups including Lions Clubs, sporting groups, churches, seniors groups, neighbourhood houses, University of the Third Age (U3A), defence forces support, emergency services and Country Women’s Association (CWA).

Of the event, Cr Anderson said: “Age truly is no barrier to contributing to our community – it was great to be able to recognise so many outstanding individuals and it is doubly special that they were nominated by others around them.

“Volunteering is such a win-win, both for the volunteer and the community. I encourage anyone with some spare time to look into volunteering through Council or one of our many valuable local groups.”

Guest speaker Helen Yorston, from the Bendigo Volunteer Resource Centre, talked about the many benefits of volunteering, both to the community and to the volunteer. She encouraged everyone to think about ways they might contribute their energy, enthusiasm and skills as a volunteer.
