Today marks the start of National Recycling Week, with this year’s theme What goes around, comes around.
Council is teaming up with Planet Ark to promote and raise awareness about the benefits of correctly recycling to avoid contamination and ensure that recyclable materials can be effectively processed and reused.
Residents are encouraged to review their recycling practices, such as separating recyclable materials from general waste, reducing waste generation, and reusing items whenever possible. Much of what we currently send to landfill is valuable material that could be reused, repurposed or recycled.
Mayor Mark Johnson reminds us of the importance of recycling correctly stating, “By choosing to recycle correctly, we can all contribute to a cleaner and greener future”.
Council provides a free Community Recycling Centre (CRC) for e-waste recycling services allowing residents to reduce their environmental footprint and preventing landfill waste.
You can drop off at the CRC the following.
Printer cartridges Household/car batteries Smoke detectors Fluorescent lights/ light bulbs and fittings E- Waste (Computers, printers, televisions) Oils Mobile phones Fire extinguishers Gas bottles
Wanting to go a step further to have a positive impact on the environment?
Recycle your plastic and glass containers at the ‘Return and Earn’, located at the Coles carpark. Use your kitchen caddy, house chickens or invest in a worm composter - keeping food scraps out of landfill helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Check out Planet Ark’s website for more ways to help the environment.National Recycling Week serves as a reminder for people to review their recycling habits and to come together and focus on the importance of recycling and its positive impact on the environment.
