In the spirit of National Recycling Week (13 - 19 November 2023), Benalla Rural City Council is proud to announce a significant step forward in its commitment to fostering a sustainable future.
Benalla Rural City Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn is thrilled to be part of a Council that is leading the way in achieving a circular economy and responsible waste management.
“At the forefront of these initiatives is the opening of our new transfer station and embracing a shift from weight-based to volume-based pricing,” Cr Hearn said.
“Customers will now be charged based on the volume and type of waste they dispose of, encouraging responsible segregation and recycling practices.”
Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "Our new transfer station along with the introduction of textile recycling, signifies our commitment to a greener future for Benalla Rural City. By embracing these changes, we're empowering our residents to be active participants in reducing waste and promoting recycling."
Adding to the excitement is the participation of Benalla Rural City in the Victorian Government’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic), which started on 1 November 2023. Through CDS Vic, residents can earn a 10 cent refund for every eligible drink container returned, contributing significantly to environmental conservation efforts. Foott Waste Solutions will operate a dedicated depot in Benalla, offering residents an easy and convenient way to participate in the scheme.
"The Container Deposit Scheme encourages a circular economy, where materials are recycled and reused, minimising waste and conserving resources. It's a wonderful opportunity for our community to actively engage in environmental conservation," Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn said.
These initiatives underscore the Council's dedication to fostering a vibrant, sustainable community through the promotion of a circular economy and responsible recycling practices.
During National Recycling Week approaches, Benalla Rural City Council invites all residents to embrace these initiatives, making a collective impact on our environment and community.
