Local pool owners can add a matching, if only theoretic, cape to their goggles and rash vests and be ‘safety heroes’ this summer.

As the weather heats up and keen kids dive in, Logan City Council is urging property owners, parents and carers to check pools comply with Queensland safety regulations.

Planning Chair, Councillor Jon Raven, said an inspection now could save a young life.

"When water is involved, tragedy can happen in an instant, as kids can be so quick to give adult supervision the slip,” Cr Raven said.

"But it's avoidable with a few simple steps before we even think about swimming."

Cr Raven urged residents to ensure pool fencing and barriers met safety standards.

Pool safety heroes are also asked to:

Never lock or prop open pool gates Ensure pool gates are self-latching Always supervise children and put phones down Teach kids about pool safety Learn CPR

Pool owners have a responsibility to comply with regulations to keep children safe.

Fines are possible for non-compliance, but Cr Raven said Council preferred education over penalties.

"If an issue is found, we want to support owners and help them to make their pool safe – fines are a last resort," Cr Raven said.
