Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is encouraging residents to have a say in the State Government’s public consultation on future water projects as part of the public consultation for the draft Southern and Darling Downs Regional Water Assessment.

TRC Mayor Geoff McDonald welcomed the public consultation and said it was important residents provided feedback to the State Government.

“Water is a precious commodity. We all understand how critically important water is to our community and to the future growth of our Region,” Mayor McDonald said.

“The biggest challenge we face in regional investment to the Toowoomba Region is access to water.

“The Regional Water Assessment program will be a roadmap for economic growth.

“Looking at a baseline of water availability will help chart options for future water sources.”

TRC Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Rebecca Vonhoff said the Regional Water Assessment would need to address the Region’s long-term water security challenges.

“Whatever season we’re having, water security remains critical to our Region,” she said.

“To ensure we have the necessary infrastructure in place, we need to make sure the Regional Water Assessment takes into account all our current and future needs.

“We need to make sure this is a plan, not just for the next 10 or 20 years, but for the long-term water security of the Toowoomba Region.”

Public consultation will run until 14 December with an on-ground consultation session taking place in Toowoomba on 27 November. Details are available on the Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water website.
