Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) has taken on board community feedback and identified a preferred route for the Glenvale to Toowoomba CBD Active Transport Corridor.

The route developed, which includes a concept design, will make use of Anzac Avenue and Hill Street at the eastern end, with residents now encouraged to submit further feedback.

TRC Infrastructure Committee Portfolio Chair Councillor Carol Taylor thanked the community for their contribution to date and called for additional feedback on the concept design.

“This active transport connection will transform the area and bring so many benefits to our community.

“We received a great response in April when we were looking at our route options, and we want to continue to work with the community to make sure what we deliver will meet the needs now and into the future.”

“Using Anzac Avenue and Hill Street had support from the community, and when we combine that with the existing space along that route, it provides us great opportunities to deliver great outcomes,” Cr Taylor said.

Cr Taylor said the planning was in line with the Downs South West Principal Cycle Network Plan and would help meet TRC’s vision for a sustainable and integrated transport system that supports liveable communities.

“The community should note that there is no funding for the detailed design construction phases, hence the project would occur in multiple stages over many years,” Cr Taylor said.

Along with the community feedback received, Council has continued to engage with TRC’s Regional Active and Public Transport Advisory Group and Regional Access and Disability Advisory Group, as well as local cycling and walking groups.

“We know that a leading barrier to people choosing active transport is the availability of safe, connected and well-planned routes. We are looking forward to more projects which help our residents choose cycling or walking to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle and improve liveability of our region.

“We want to hear from residents, as well as people who walk, cycle, scoot, and drive to help further our concept design process for this exciting project,” Cr Taylor said.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) completed ‘shovel ready’ designs to connect Glenvale Road to Anzac Avenue via Karrool Street to provide a safe active transport crossing of Toowoomba Connection Road and avoid the busy James Street and Anzac Avenue intersection.

The corridor will connect TMR’s proposed Karrool Street project to the existing West Creek corridor, which links to Toowoomba’s City Centre.

This project is jointly funded through TMR’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants program and Council.
