Throughout late November and early December the City of Rockingham will proudly celebrate International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) 2023 by hosting several free all-abilities activities.
IDPwD is a United Nations observed day celebrated in December each year. It aims to increase public awareness, understanding, and acceptance of people with disability – it celebrates the contributions and achievements of people with disability while also promoting inclusive communities.
All community members are invited to participate in these events and workshops, which will run from Friday 24 November – Friday 8 December.
Key highlights include the ‘Have a Go’ All Abilities Activity Morning taking place at Churchill Park on Wednesday 29 November from 9.30am – 11.30am. This event will include a Tai Chi session, soccer skills clinic and a mindful movement class.
There also will be pop-up stalls at two local shopping centres; Secret Harbour Square and Rockingham Centre that showcase local micro-enterprises owned by people with disability.
City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin said supporting IDPwD was a key focus in the City’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP).
“Through the City’s DAIP we are committed to providing opportunities that support the full inclusion of people with disability getting involved in community life,” Mayor Hamblin said.
The microenterprise pop-up stalls at local shopping centres will highlight the businesses that people with disability in our community are building. Throughout the two weeks of activities there will also be several workshops facilitated by people with lived experience of disability that cover topics from filmmaking to business skills.“The City is delighted to be working closely with local businesses to facilitate these stalls, and this type of collaboration is a great way to break down social barriers and support IDPwD.”
