Freo's summer of sport
City of Fremantle 27 Nov 2023

There is a sporting blitz along Fremantle's coastline this summer with both regular coastal events and one-offs such as the International Canoe Federation’s Ocean Racing Championships.

Supported by the City of Fremantle, competitors from 25 countries will start at Bathers Beach in Fremantle and finish in Scarborough on Saturday 2 December.

The iconic Fremantle Ports Swim Thru is the following Saturday (9 December) with 450 swimmers expected to splash off at 8am at South Fremantle.

If you're happy to start at 5am, then there are Cold Nips Wednipsday Dips held every Wednesday. Fremantle will host the social swim four times this summer at Bathers, Leighton and South Beaches.

If you prefer simply to look at big boats, then the Clipper Round the World yachts start arriving at Fremantle Sailing Club from Friday 8 December.

This is the fifth time the race has stopped in Fremantle as part of its 40,000nm circumnavigation of the globe and this year will feature a fleet of 11. The 70-ft ocean racing yachts resume the race on Tuesday 19 December bound for Newcastle in New South Wales.

The community is invited to take a free tour on board the yachts on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 December.

The summer events keep on going in 2024 with the Freo Ocean Classic on Saturday 27 January; Beach Volleyball Tour on 23-25 February; and Port to Pub on Saturday 16 March – all at Leighton Beach.

Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge said the amount of sporting events going on around Fremantle's beaches reflected the city's great lifestyle and outdoor assets.

"People living or visiting here don't have to look hard to find something to do or see in Fremantle and that includes its coastal precincts.

"It's terrific to host these international watersport events that Fremantle is so famous for and which contribute so much to the city’s vibrancy and diversity."
