At its ordinary meeting on Tuesday 28 November 2023, the City of Rockingham Council approved June Road Reserve as the location for the new Safety Bay Pump and Jump Track.
Council’s decision follows on from extensive consultation conducted by the City earlier this year, where community members were invited to provide their detailed thoughts on installing the track at either June Road Reserve in safety or Apex Reserve in Shoalwater.
June Road Reserve was approved by Council as the preferred site due to a number of factors which included the majority of children engaged during consultation wanting the track at this location, better outcomes for wildlife in the area, and less impact on other park users in comparison to Apex Reserve.
Mayor Deb Hamblin said selection of the site was the first step in delivering a project that would benefit young people in the Safety Bay/Shoalwater areas for years to come.
“After engaging with the community the City is aware there is strong demand for outdoor active recreation opportunities in Safety Bay and Shoalwater, particularly for children aged 9 – 16 years old,” Mayor Hamblin said.
Once the first design for the track has been completed, the City will be presenting the plans to local high school students to gauge their thoughts and make any changes that may be required within the approved budget.“At this stage construction is most likely to occur after the Easter school holiday period, and we expect the track to be open for use by the end of June 2024.
“Importantly, this project aligns with the City’s Strategic Community Plan aspirations of creating a family-friendly, safe and connected community - and delivering a built environment carefully planned for today and tomorrow.”
