Australia Day Event

Nominations for the 2024 Australia Day award are now being reviewed by Council ahead of the Australia Day events on Thursday 25 January for all nominees, and Friday, 26 January 2024 for the award ceremony.

Award categories for the 2024 Australia Day awards are:

Citizen of the Year Young Citizen of the Year Senior Citizen of the Year Sportsperson of the Year Event of the Year Community Group of the Year Volunteer of the Year

“Keeping Cool in the Pool”

Celebrate Australia Day with a FREE family event from 4pm – 8pm, on 26 January at the Yass Memorial Pool.

There will be something for the whole family - inflatable pool obstacle course, lawn games, food vans, and a DJ.

Christmas/New Year opening hours

All council services will be closed from close of business on Friday, 22 December until Tuesday, 2 January, other than:

Swimming Pools – open except Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Yass Valley Information Centre – open except Christmas Day. Waste Transfer Stations – open except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Waste Collection – Residents that would normally have their recycling bins emptied on Christmas Day will have them done on Boxing Day. Roads and Maintenance Services – On-Call staff will remain available for (genuine) emergencies. Yass Library – Closed from Christmas Day to January 2nd. Water and Wastewater – Crews maintained to attend to service needs and emergencies. Duty Officer – An on-call duty officer will be maintained over the entire period.

 

Works Update:

Murrumbateman Recreation Ground Amenities Building Contractor has commenced construction works. Completion due March 2024. Victoria Park Skate Park Extension GRAND OPENING Sunday 17 December 2023. For further information please go to Councils website. Wee Jasper Carpark Preliminary works have commenced onsite. The carpark design is currently on public exhibition with submissions to be received by 4:00pm Monday 11 December 2023. Victoria Park Lighting Upgrade Tender closed 16 October 2023. Evaluation is being undertaken. O’Connor Park Boat Ramp Replacement RFQ closes 4pm on Friday 8 December 2023. Road Maintenance Updates: Back Creek Road Bridge Murray Constructions have been to site and completed the first round of piling. Works will continue to progress off site until Feb 2024 and are expected to be completed by the end of May 2024. Back Creek Road Sealing - Stage 2 All environmental reporting is now complete, and the design is being finalised. We are planning to go out to tender early 2024 and commence shortly thereafter. Jeir Creek Bridge During the Christmas period all traffic will be going over the new bridge, under traffic control (ie: reduced speeds) to ensure access in the event of inclement weather. Complete Civil will return to site mid-Jan to undertake the remainder of the works and be completed early 2024. Greenwood Road Bridge Replacements Council and consultants are finalising the last of the detailed design work in preparation for tender in 2024. Sutton Road Rehabilitation Works are progressing well onsite, during the Christmas period there will be traffic controls in place, and we urge all motorists to adhere to these measures. Lentro will return to site mid-Jan and completion is scheduled for mid-2024. Woolgarlo Road Culvert – Storm Damage Repair Quotations have closed for the replacement of a damaged culvert on Woolgarlo Road from the 2022 storm events. Works will commence on site early 2024. Flood Warning System – Investigation & Design Council have appointed a contractor to undertake the hydrological investigation and associated design works for a proposed integrated flood warning system for Yass Valley. This is scheduled to be completed mid-2024. Get Active NSW – Pedestrian & Cycling Design

Council have commenced design works for several proposed shared pathways and cycleways throughout the LGA. These are currently design only projects, however once completed Council will apply for grant funding for construction.
