Council has released a series of short videos explaining the key concepts it believes need to be considered for the city’s sustainable growth.
The “Growing well” videos form part of Council’s extensive community engagement as it progresses and develops the Towards 2050: Shaping Cairns Growth Management Strategy, which will establish a clear and coordinated long term plan to accommodate future growth.
Mayor Terry James said that with almost 70,000 extra people expected to call Cairns home by 2050, careful planning will play a vital role in providing more of what we love and managing the challenges that come with growth.
“We expect that by 2050, the Cairns Local Government Area will have a population of up to 241,000 (based on Queensland Government information released in June 2023),” Cr James said.
“We need to plan for that growth now, to make sure that everyone can live here and enjoy what we love about Cairns today.
“A lot of work and consultation has already been done, but there is much more to do and we want residents to tell us exactly what is important to them.”
The Growing well videos explore factors that determine where and how to accommodate future growth, while protecting the things the community loves about the city and region.
“We want residents to be part of shaping a whole-of-community conversation on growing well in Cairns,” Cr James said.
“Watch the videos, share them with your family and friends, or strike up a conversation at your next barbeque or fishing trip.
“Once you’ve had a look, I would encourage people to leave feedback to ensure you are having a say in the future of our city.”
