Recognised for their rapid response and smart thinking, two young men successfully averted a potential tragedy due to a medical emergency at Bold Park Aquatic Centre, earning them well-deserved bravery accolades.
In November 2022, Jake, a regular swimmer at the City Beach pool, found himself in the midst of a potential tragedy. He noticed a fellow swimmer in distress, coughing uncontrollably and struggling to stay afloat. With no time to lose, Jake swam over to assist, with the man saying he had swallowed water. However, it soon became apparent that the situation was far more serious.
The man began to slip under the water, his words slurring which was a clear sign of a stroke. Without hesitation, Jake swam the man to the edge of the pool and called for help. Cade, a lifeguard on duty, quickly jumped into action. Together, they managed to get the man out of the water, placing him in the recovery position and providing vital oxygen until the ambulance arrived.
Their quick thinking and immediate response saved the man’s life, earning Jake the Gold Star award and Cade the Bravery Commendation at the Royal Life Saving WA Bravery Awards in October 2023.
“Being recognised is an honour but knowing that we were able to make a difference and save a life -that’s the real reward,” shared Jake, who emphasised the importance of first aid and CPR training.
“It’s something everyone should know. You never think you’re going to be in a situation like that, but it can happen to anyone, anywhere. I’m just glad I had the training to help when it was needed,” Jake added.
Their story is a reminder of the critical role training and preparedness play in emergency situations. Bold Park Aquatic Centre has a strong focus on safety, continually investing in the training of its staff and the well-being of its customers and visitors.
