A 2.5-hectare park on the fringe of the Westmead Innovation Precinct is set for a major transformation starting with a major upgrade of its playground and picnic facilities.
The playground marks stage one in the delivery of of a new landscape masterplan for Shannons Paddock adopted by Council this week, and reflects the growing demand from the community for greater open spaces in the Parramatta area.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Pierre Esber said the masterplan aims to transform the park into a vibrant recreational space for the thriving communities in Westmead and Wentworthville.
“Shannons Paddock is much-loved by our community and the surrounding neighbourhoods are rapidly evolving,” Cr Esber said.
“The delivery of the masterplan will see the current park reimagined as a space for outdoor discovery, adventure, exercise and community events for local families to enjoy.”
The approved masterplan recommends a new playground and amenities block, pedestrian paths with improved street access, separated cycleway, fitness loop with outdoor exercise equipment, park seating and sheltered spaces with tables and BBQs, and an open lawn for recreational activities.
Improvements for Finlaysons Creek which flows through the park are also envisaged, and include a wetland, water treatment and boardwalk as part of a larger project to naturalise the existing concrete channel.
The upgraded playground is expected to be completed in the 2024-25 financial year, with other items outlined in the masterplan delivered as funding becomes available.
