West Village, West End Wednesday, December 27, 2023 – Friday, March 29, 2024 Over 100 Richmond Birdwing Butterflies have arrived in West End this summer. Presented as part of the Brisbane City Council Outdoor Gallery in partnership with West Village, The Birdwing is an interactive installation that celebrates the endangered butterfly through light sculpture, and augmented reality. This free installation allows you to get up close and personal with the Richmond Birdwing butterfly, using AR filters to allow you to literally hold them in your hand. The larger than life hanging light sculpture flowers of the Birdwing Butterfly vine seem to be doing the trick in bringing flocks of these digital butterflies to West Village! The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly (Ornithoptera richmondia) is the largest subtropical Australian butterfly, with a wing span of up to 16cm. It was once common sight throughout Brisbane, however due to habitat loss, it is now considered a vulnerable species.West Village is proud to be part of a major effort to replant the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly’s natural food source – the Birdwing Butterfly Vine (Pararistolochia praevenosa) and help restore the butterfly population of our city.  The vine has been planted throughout the precinct as part of a program to help restore a habitat corridor for the Richmond Birdwing butterfly.
