An influx of visitors to the Region is expected for two sports tourism events early in 2024, which today (Tuesday, December 19, 2023) each received $5000 Sports Tourism grants provided by Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC).

The 2024 Equestrian Queensland Youth Development Camp, which will be held at the Toowoomba Showgrounds from January 12 to 14, and the International Legends of Rugby League event, to be held at Club Pittsworth from February 14 to 17, were awarded the grants at the December Ordinary Meeting of Council.

TRC Environment and Community Services Committee chair Cr James O’Shea said each proposal was assessed to provide a wider social and economic benefit to the community.

“Council is pleased to offer Sports Tourism grants to support these two event organisers,” Cr O’Shea said.

“The 2024 Equestrian Queensland Youth Development Camp offers training for 12 to 25-year-old equestrian athletes and their horses.

“This is an established event and will enhance our Region’s reputation and standing as a venue for developing young riders’ talents.

“This is especially timely, given the proposal to create an Equestrian Centre of Excellence at the Toowoomba Showgrounds.

“Apart from the opportunities for riders across the Region and other areas, this proposal is pitched at creating a facility to cater for major equestrian events ahead of, and during, the 2032 Brisbane Olympics and Paralympics.

“A host of former international rugby league players will visit Pittsworth and surrounding areas in February to attend school visits and other community events.

“The highlight will be a rugby league match against a local legends team at the Pittsworth Leagues Club ground in Short Street on Saturday, February 17, 2024.”

Cr O’Shea said economic analysis of the events showed the equestrian camp would deliver an economic benefit of approximately $120,000 to the local economy, while the rugby league events would return an estimated $177,000 to the economy.
