The Alkimos aquatic and recreation centre project has taken another step forward after Council endorsed the schematic design at a meeting held this month.

The facility is set to feature indoor and outdoor pools, indoor sports courts, a splash pad, gymnasium, creche and play area.

The endorsement of the design at a projected cost of $78 million follows the acquisition of a 3.5-hectare site in the Alkimos Town Centre, located just 50 metres away from the future METRONET Alkimos train and bus stations.

Mayor Linda Aitken said the move was a fantastic step forward for the exciting project.

“Council is excited to see this popular project progress and very pleased it will feature a solar system that will offset the cost of pool heating and reduce the power consumption of the facility,” she said.

“We are grateful to have received funding commitments of $30 million from the Federal Government, $10 million from the State Government and $12.6 million through the Alkimos-Eglinton Developer Contribution Plan to help us deliver this facility for our growing community.”

The City will continue to explore additional funding options towards the project.
