A mesmerising interactive installation exploring the connection between the land and sea will light up the Great Hall within the newly reopened Parramatta Town Hall throughout January.
The Sea of Light exhibition, presented by PHIVE and Patch Theatre, will give children and their families a chance to immerse themselves in a world of glowing interactive art by contemporary Aboriginal visual artist Elizabeth Close – for free.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Pierre Esber said Sea of Light will be a truly memorable experience that combines art, technology, and storytelling.
“Sea of Light offers a unique opportunity for our community to engage with their creativity and explore the deep connection between land and sea,” Cr Esber said.
“This is a great opportunity for our younger residents to keep busy throughout the school holidays and also experience the newly reopened Parramatta Town Hall.”
“I encourage everyone to book free tickets to visit the exhibition and be captivated by this extraordinary experience.”
With a UV torch as a paintbrush, ticketholders will be able to paint and stencil their own voyage and steer ships that leave glowing paths in their wake, immerse in the wonders of the ocean, create their own nautical soundtrack, control colour and light, and discover sea creatures in a magical pond.
Sea of Light will open to the public from Thursday 4 January until Sunday 28 January 2024, with pre-booked sessions running from 10am to 4pm, with entry through PHIVE.
Families looking for sensory-friendly activities will also be catered for, with low sensory Sea of Light sessions available every Monday at 10am (8, 15, and 22 January 2024).
Sensory sessions are specifically designed to accommodate those with sensory sensitivities or anyone in need of a calmer atmosphere. These sessions feature an open-door policy, enabling free movement in and out of the venue. Additionally, staff will be on hand to guide patrons to a designated quiet, low-sensory area for those requiring a more tranquil space.
Please note that the exhibition will be closed on the Australia Day public holiday (Friday 26 January 2024)
