Small-scale energy generation facilities one step closer

The development of power generation and storage facilities at two Gannawarra Shire Council-managed locations in Kerang is one step closer to occurring.

Council approved at its December 2023 meeting a proposal from Kig Energy to construct small-scale solar energy generation facilities at the Kerang Aerodrome and Kerang Transfer Station.

The proposal follows on from Council’s decision in July 2020 to authorise the leasing of a 12-hectare parcel of land within the Kerang Aerodrome for the purpose of constructing, commissioning, and operating a 5-megawatt solar micro grid.

“Council has been actively collaborating with Kig Energy since 2019 to identify suitable locations and develop a comprehensive proposal for the establishment of small-scale solar energy generation facilities,” Mayor Ross Stanton said.

As part of the proposal, a 4.99-megawatt solar generation facility incorporating a 5-megawatt battery storage unit would be built at the Kerang Aerodrome, with a 1-megawatt solar generation facility incorporating a 1-megawatt battery storage unit to be built at the Kerang Transfer Station.

Council will enter into a formal agreement between Council and Kig Energy, which is to be developed and approved at a future Council Meeting.

“This proposal is a win-win for Council, residents and community groups, who are all facing the effects of increased electricity and services costs,” Mayor Stanton said.

“The repurposing of underutilised Council-managed land for small-scale solar energy generation aligns with our commitment to environmental responsibility, contributing to reduced carbon emissions and supporting broader sustainability goals outlined in regional, state, and national plans.

“The facilities are also designed to provide cheaper electricity options for Kerang residents and community groups, which is achieved by avoiding network transmission costs.”
