As part of this year’s Australia Day Celebrations, Charters Towers will welcome Australia Day Ambassador Douglas Millican, Vice President of the RAAF Association Townsville, to the region.
Over the past six years, Douglas has played a crucial role in North Queensland Legacy, mentoring numerous legatees, and providing support to a diverse group of beneficiaries aged 4 to 102.
Honoured as the Townsville City Council Australia Day Citizen of the Year 2023, Douglas is celebrated for his tireless commitment to the community, volunteering countless hours and leaving an indelible mark through his selfless contributions.
In addition to his community involvement, Douglas actively participates in local defence force resettlement seminars, offering invaluable advice on navigating life in Townsville after separation from defence forces.
“Council is delighted that Douglas will be coming to Charters Towers for the 2024 Australia Day activities. His visit will allow locals to hear from and meet a very passionate, dedicated and inspiring Australian,” Councillor Graham Lohmann said.
As part of his visit to Charters Towers, Douglas will present the keynote address at the Charters Towers Australia Day Awards Ceremony as part of his Australia Day Ambassador duties.
The Australia Day Ambassador Program sends high-achieving Australians to over 300 community celebrations nationwide every Australia Day. Ambassadors are past recipients of the Australian of the Year Awards, sportspeople, scientists, businesspeople, actors and community workers who provide inspiration and pride to Australia Day events and activities.
The Australia Day Awards Ceremony will be held on Thursday, 25 January 2024, at The World Theatre from 6pm.
