Albany's Mounts precinct will soon be connected to the town centre via a shared path, facilitating a safe and accessible route for active transport users.
The City of Albany was successful in securing funding from the Department of Transport’s Western Australian Bicycle Network grants program to support construction of the Marine Drive Mounts Access Pathway.
The pathway will allow individuals to walk, wheel or ride across town, along Brunswick Street up to Apex Drive traversing through Marine Drive and Forts Road, aligning with the Mounts Master Plan.
This new path link will significantly improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists and establish a crucial connection for visitors commuting from the Port or CBD to the esteemed National Anzac Centre.
Lacking a shared path currently, the only safe means of accessing the Mounts and Albany Heritage Park is by car, underscoring the importance of the path for enhanced accessibility.
Acting Chief Executive Officer Matthew Gilfellon said the project provides a crucial link for Albany’s popular tourism attraction at the Mounts.
“The undertaking not only adheres to the highest standards of safety but also aligns seamlessly with the City's vision for a more accessible and interconnected community,” he said.
“Construction of the Marine Drive Mounts Access Path is a significant milestone in the city's commitment to enhancing connectivity, promoting sustainable transportation, and promoting future tourism and economic growth.
“The completion of this project will not only enhance connectivity within the city but also contribute to our broader vision of a sustainable and walking and riding friendly Albany”.
Scheduled to commence construction in January and conclude by late April 2024, the City anticipates the positive impact this path will have on community safety, connectivity, and well-being.
