Senior Citizens Centre – Proposed Name Change

Published on 19 January 2024

Benalla Rural City Council is seeking community feedback on the proposed name change of the Benalla Senior Citizens Community Centre.

At the Planning and Finance Meeting on Wednesday 6 December 2023, a proposal was put forth regarding the potential renaming of the Benalla Senior Citizens and Community Centre. This proposal stems from an initiative by the primary users of the facility, U3A, and Benalla Senior Citizens Club.

User groups of the Centre have suggested it be renamed the ‘Benalla Seniors and Community Centre.’

Benalla Rural City Council Mayor, Cr Danny Claridge said the Council has shown its support for this change, considering it a move towards inclusivity for all user groups utilising the building, while ensuring easy identification by the broader community.

"The Council supports the proposal to rename the Benalla Senior Citizens and Community Centre,” Cr Claridge said.

“It is a positive step towards inclusivity and ensuring that all user groups feel represented. The collaboration with U3A and Benalla Senior Citizens Club reflects the cooperative spirit within our community.

"Benalla Seniors and Community Centre captures the essence of the facility, encompassing both the seniors who utilise its services and the broader community that engages in various activities within the centre. It aligns with our commitment to creating spaces that are welcoming and easily identifiable to all,” Cr Claridge said.

Benalla Rural City Council is now inviting community feedback on the proposed name change. It is crucial to note that Council is specifically seeking feedback on the suggested name, ‘Benalla Seniors and Community Centre,’ and is not actively soliciting alternate suggestions at this stage.
