On Friday 26 January, you are invited to join Australia Day Ambassador, Mr Bill Hetherington OAM, at Edward River Council’s Australia Day celebration at the Deniliquin Town Hall to recognise the resilience of Australians and focus on what we can achieve as a community and nation.
Mr Hetherington has lived in Deniliquin his whole life and was appropriately awarded an Order of Australia medal for his services to the community in 2015.
Edward River Council Mayor, Cr Peta Betts is pleased that Mr Hetherington will join with the community, serving as Australia Day Ambassador, to celebrate this important day.
“Australia Day is an opportunity for everyone living in the Edward River region to think about what it means to be Australian. Our national day is a time to celebrate and share, and it is this spirit of community that makes Edward River such a wonderful place to live,” said Cr Betts.
Mr Hetherington is also thrilled to be part of Australia Day. “I’m surprised and grateful for the selection of someone local…I am very proud to represent our local citizens in the spirit of unity,” Mr Hetherington said. Preparations are in full swing for the Australia Day celebrations which will commence with a free breakfast from 8:30am at Civic Plaza, followed by the official ceremony commencing at 9:45am at the Deniliquin Town Hall.
The proceedings will feature an Australian Citizenship Ceremony followed by Australia Day Awards presentations to honour our region's community achievements and outstanding individuals, including performances from Sing Australia Choir and The Edward River Concert Band.
The Edward River community and visitors to the area are encouraged to come along to the Deniliquin Town Hall on Australia Day and celebrate our nation and our people.
