Moree Plains Shire Council joined representatives from Balonne Shire Council, with Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall MP in the official opening of the 20-metre boat ramp on the Barwon River in Mungindi, Friday 12 January 2024.
Mayor Mark Johnson stated his appreciation for the cross-border collaboration in delivering the final stage of the Mungindi River Park. “This project is a direct result of our Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the ever strengthening relationship between our two Councils. This project, not only the impressive boat ramp that we officially open, but the entire Mungindi River Park beautification works.”
Service representatives from state and local state emergency services (SES), police and ambulance with community members attended the opening of this major infrastructure. To officially open the ramp, attendees watched on as the SES launched one of their rescue vessels into the Barwon River.
Not only is the ramp an important part of having boats launch safely into the water it also provides a recreational space for all users to swim or enjoy watercraft activities.
With Balonne Shire Council managing the project, the boat ramp was the fourth and final stage of the Mungindi River Park upgrade. The project has seen the inclusion of new amenities, car parking and a BBQ, along with a playground. The Mungindi River Park will support both Council’s RV strategy, which encourages longer stays and provide economic benefits for the township.
“Finally, to the Mungindi community please enjoy this amazing facility that you now have,” announced Mayor Johnson.
A grant of $300,000 from the NSW Department of Primary Industries under the previous State Government was used to construct the boat ramp on the Queensland side of the Barwon River.
