Toowoomba Regional Council is encouraging residents to join or arrange gatherings highlighting the importance of families across February 2024.

Toowoomba Region Mayor Geoff McDonald said he was pleased to hear moves were afoot to re-invigorate the former Family Week.

“This February, residents are encouraged to host their own gatherings that might include their wider relations or any networks that include groups such as sporting, community, church, business, school or cultural members,” Mayor McDonald said.

“For example, Highlands College is organising a picnic for their families to enjoy one evening next week.

“The idea is to acknowledge and support the central role families play as the cornerstone of our communities.

“We are celebrating the many different forms of families today and offering them a chance to establish new relationships or stronger bonds across our communities.

“Extending the hand of friendship can break barriers of loneliness or exclusion that do exist in any community. By looking out for each other we can include others by inviting them to a family barbecue or asking friends and family to enjoy a picnic or a simple game of backyard cricket.

“We are fortunate to enjoy a family friendly lifestyle in our Region and the nation. The Toowoomba Region has hundreds of parks that cater for recreation and leisure activities for all ages and abilities.

“Summer Tunes across numerous Regional and Toowoomba city parks each Sunday afternoon in February offers a convenient backdrop for family outings.

“We are well served for health, education and other services that support and connect families, but we need to keep a focus on the human touch that sparks a sense of belonging.

“Toowoomba has been acknowledged in past years as one of Queensland’s and the nation’s most family friendly areas, so I’m confident we can rouse this spirit.”
