Wollondilly Shire Council is entering a new phase of waste management, following a decision at Tuesday night’s Council meeting to move towards implementing changes on site at the Bargo Waste Management Centre, keeping the site open to the community while also moving toward site remediation.
Since the site at Bargo was first opened in the 1960’s, Council has been able to adapt to changing environmental requirements to extend the life of the facility.
It has now reached maximum capacity and the time has come to slow down landfill operations and move towards a new way of managing waste in the Shire; taking care of the environment while still providing a service for the community.
Mayor Matt Gould said, “This elected Council is making the hard decisions on a number of issues, and I am pleased to see that we are addressing the need for remediation of the site at Bargo while minimising the impact to our residents. These changes will mean very little practical effect for residents.”
“This model will keep the Bargo Waste Management Centre operational and continue to provide waste drop-off and transfer services for Wollondilly residents, while planning for the remediation and closure of the landfilling operation as required under the EPA licence.”
There may be some temporary closures at the site as Council transitions to this new model, however there are a number of other options available for dropping off waste for residents of the Wollondilly Shire.
The licenced resource recovery transfer facility at 67 Wonga Road Picton, operated by Remondis on Council land, remains open to accept waste at reasonable rates.
Alternatively, there are other facilities outside the Shire including at Spring Farm, Bowral and Penrith. Problem wastes such as gas bottles, paint, motor oil and batteries can be disposed of at your local Community Recycling Centre for free.
