Ballina Byron Gateway Airport has continued its longstanding commitment to Byron Bay Bluesfest after expanding its partnership with its highly innovative VIP Lounge concept at last weekend’s festival.
The airport, owned by the Ballina Shire Council, claims its first time as naming rights sponsor for the Bluesfest VIP lounge was a huge success.
Paul Tsikleas, Manager of Commercial Services for Ballina Shire Council, said that council and the airport were eager to continue the partnership given the success of last weekend’s event.
“We are delighted with the partnership and the VIP lounge concept has given considerable further impetus to the significance and uniqueness of Ballina Byron Gateway Airport as the gateway to our fantastic region,” said Mr Tsikleas.
“We will be reviewing our role in the coming months but in terms of brand recognition and the innovative concept of creating a VIP lounge emulating an airport VIP lounge, it was a real treat for our customers.
“We are committed to the longstanding success of Bluesfest for the community and achieving greater brand recognition of what the airport offers to customers is a very important strategic initiative.”
Ballina Byron Gateway Airport has been the official airport sponsor for the Byron Bay Bluesfest for the last seven years. The airport expanded its involvement for last weekend’s Bluesfest with a new concept where it created an ‘immersive experience” for VIP guests which emulated a real-life airport lounge.
The airport lounge was incredibly well received as a creative and enjoyable way of replicating the welcoming airport atmosphere for which the airport has become renowned. VIP patrons appreciated the immersive experience, including interactions with airport and staff who dressed as cabin crew and air marshals.
Julie Stewart, Airport Manager, said the experience reflected the relaxed experience of flying into Ballina.
“The airport is all about warm friendly service that is very much a part of the fabric of the airport and its relationship with the community - the VIP lounge concept certainly reflected this.”
Ms Stewart said it was important to support events such as Bluesfest, Splendour in the Grass and other major events that provide employment in the region, as well as providing easy access to the region from other states.
“In recent years we have achieved a greater awareness of the direct flights to and from Sydney and Melbourne from both locals and visitors. We feel it’s important to play our part in continuing to showcase the airport as the best way to access to the Northern Rivers.
“Our customer feedback shows that people are very keen to take the easiest access route to the region via Ballina airport rather than having to fly into Brisbane or the Gold Coast and then getting transfers of one to two hours.
“Many of our customers now realise that they can get direct flights into Ballina and transfer in a matter of minutes to Lennox Head, Byron Bay and surrounding townships.
“Both the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport and the Ballina Shire Council agree that our increased presence and support of the Bluesfest this year will only further showcase the easier options of accessing the region.
“As such we are keen to continue to support Bluesfest and other major events in the region to increase our exposure and improve brand awareness at such events. We want to support the regional business and tourism economy and acknowledge the significance of these events not only for our airline partners but also for local business, tourism and communities.”
