Expressions of interest are now open for groups to transform vacant open space next to the Darch Plaza Shopping Centre on Kingsway into anything from a community garden to a new community building.

The City is offering the opportunity for a ground lease for the 2000sqm grassed site in Darch, which is managed by the City for ‘Community Purposes’.

The successful applicant will fund works for a future social, cultural or recreational facility.

Mayor Linda Aitken said she encouraged groups to consider making an expression of interest and activate the site for the benefit of the community.

“I’m excited to hear about people’s vision and hopes for this site, and how grassroots community groups could use the space in future,” she said.

“This is part of the City working to make land available for community groups – we have recently seen Scouts WA develop a facility on City land in Tapping, and a Wildflower Society nursery at Kingsway Regional Sporting Complex is close to fruition.

“Over the next 20 years, more than 150,000 new residents are predicted to call the City of Wanneroo home and we’re committed working with our community to provide more health and wellbeing opportunities like this.”

Applications that provide community benefit, offer inclusive services and have sustainability measures in place will be highly considered.
