Free forum shares information to keep young people safe online

Redland City Council is holding a free forum to provide parents, carers and educators with information on how to keep young people safe online.
The Tech Savvy Tech Safe Forum will be held at Redland Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday 15 May 2024 from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
Mayor Jos Mitchell said the delivery of the forum aligned with a number of actions outlined in the Redlands Coast Young People’s Action Plan 2024-2027.
“Council is committed to working with external stakeholders to support our young people and ensure they have access to safe environments, including while they are online,” Cr Mitchell said.
“There are a number of government and non-government agencies that provide support to young people, however keeping them safe online requires a whole-of-community approach, with parents, guardians and carers playing a primary role.
“In an increasingly digital world, many people are concerned about the wellbeing of their children when engaging in online environments and are seeking information and guidance on how to support them.”
Council is delivering the forum in partnership with key child safety agencies including Queensland Police Service, Australian Federal Police and its education program ThinkUKnow, Centre Against Sexual Violence, Kids Helpline and Crimes Stoppers Queensland.
Topics will include the risks of sharing content online, how to report suspected or confirmed inappropriate child-related material, consent, anonymous reporting, and an overview of Kids Helpline.
Guest speakers will share information on resources and tools available to parents, provide advice on how to talk with young people about staying safe in online spaces, and where to go for help if needed.
Places at the forum are limited. Bookings are essential via the Redland Performing Arts Centre website.
There will be information stands from each of the presenting organisations in the RPAC foyer prior to the forum.
The forum will cover confronting and distressing content that may be a trigger for some people and is not suitable for people under 15 years; counsellors will be on site.
