The Town of Cambridge has moved to swiftly dispel misinformation being circulated regarding the future of Wembley Golf Course (WGC) and wants to assure our community that there are no plans to sell any portion of golf course land for development purposes, contrary to recent enquiries received.
“We understand there is some concern within the community, and within the golfing community, that land within the golf course may be sold as an outcome of the current WGC masterplan work,” Mayor Gary Mack said.
“We can confirm there will be no reduction in the footprint of the golf course – there are no plans to sell any of the land associated with the golf course.
“This is not, and has not at any stage of this process, been under consideration.
“The masterplan is at the conceptual stage only, where various options will be explored. We are taking our time on this to get it right and will not rush the process.
“Recently we have also heard and responded, to concerns from the community that the care and protection of mature tuart trees, at the course are a priority. Initial work has identified several areas for substantial revegetation of the site. To address this, Council has now resolved that a professional and independent environmental consultant will be engaged to undertake an inventory of all tree assets within the Wembley Golf Course boundary.”
While this will delay the continuation of the master plan process, it’s a critical step to ensure any planning will fully consider this independent assessment, once it is complete.
“We want to remind the community our discussions so far have been conceptual only, and Council has not yet progressed any direction for a future strategic plan for the golf course. Our golf course is an iconic and critical community facility we are very proud of, and we take seriously the importance of planning further developments at the golf course to recognise its importance to both our residential community, and the golfing community of WA.
“As we move forward with the Master Planning Project, we remain committed to ensuring WGC remains the premier public golf course in WA, and we will continue to work to maintain our status as the best public golf course experience in Australia,” Mayor Mack concluded.
