Cambridge Receives Grant for Floreat Surf Life Saving Club Upgrades

The Town of Cambridge is thrilled to announce the approval of up to $655,000 in Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) grant funding for the enhancement and modernisation of the Floreat Surf Life Saving Club (FSLSC).

The grant represents a significant investment in community sporting infrastructure and will contribute to the much-anticipated upgrade project of the FSLSC, aimed at increasing accessibility, safety, and functionality for all club members and the wider community. The project's commencement is currently pending Council approval.

Mayor Gary Mack stated, “This upgrade signifies more than just a refurbishment of the FSLSC premises - it's a leap forward in fortifying community ties.”

Cathy McIntyre, President of the FSLSC, shared her excitement, “This grant marks a transformative moment for our club and the entire community. It empowers us to elevate our facilities, ensuring they are inclusive and fully equipped to serve our diverse members and visitors.”

The CSRFF grant will facilitate crucial improvements, such as the installation of an accessible front door and universal access toilets with showers. Moreover, the project will involve substantial upgrades across the facility, providing enhanced changerooms, an upgraded kitchen, servery, bar, and the addition of new functional spaces to support activities and events.

“The recognition and support for our mission to develop local sports infrastructure through this grant is immensely appreciated. We look forward to the broadened opportunities for surf life-saving endeavours and the reinforced community connection,” McIntyre added.

Designed by longtime City Beach resident, Noel Chrystal, Partner in Johnson and Chrystal Architects, the Floreat Surf Life Saving Club was constructed in 1981. Despite the challenging coastal environment, the structure remains in good condition, testament to its robust design. The upgrade project will renew furnishings and improve accessibility, ensuring the facility can better serve the Club’s current and future members while preserving the building's legacy.
