Benalla Rural City Council is inviting residents to participate in a heritage study to identify and protect places of historical significance within the Benalla township.
On the Have Your Say Benalla website, Council has outlined several criteria for significance, including historic, rare, representative, aesthetically significant, technically significant, socially significant, and notable associations.
Mayor Cr Danny Claridge emphasised that this study is a key part of the Council's ongoing efforts to preserve Benalla’s rich history.
“Submissions to the study can include places that hold historical or cultural value,” Cr Claridge said.
“These could be buildings, structures, landscapes, streets or open spaces that are significant to individuals or groups.”
“A Heritage Study is undertaken by Councils to ensure the preservation of heritage sites.”
“The first stage of the study will focus on discovering places within the township that hold heritage value.”
The Council will then update the Heritage Overlay to apply appropriate heritage controls to these places based on the outcome of the study.
“Community input is crucial to the success of this study and residents are encouraged to participate in recognising Benalla’s heritage and shaping the town's future,” Cr Claridge said.
Submissions for the study close at 4pm on Thursday 30 May 2024. Residents can make a submission by visiting haveyoursay.benalla.vic.au and completing the online survey, or by making a written submission in person at 1 Bridge Street East, Benalla or by mail to PO Box 227 Benalla VIC 3671.
