Town of Cambridge Boosts Urban Canopy with Tree Planting Initiative

Published on 09 May 2024

The Town of Cambridge is set to substantially increase its urban forest canopy with a tree-planting initiative. As part of a broader effort to combat canopy loss in the greater Perth metropolitan area, the Town plans to plant an additional 1,000 trees during the 2023-24 financial year, with a total of 1,600 trees scheduled for planting in Winter 2024. This proactive step comes in response to the challenges posed by increased urban density and environmental threats such as the Polyphagous shot hole borer.

Mayor Gary Mack emphasised the importance of this initiative in maintaining the natural beauty and ecological health of the area. “This tree planting program represents a significant commitment by the Town to not only enhance our environment but also improve the quality of life for all residents,” Mayor Mack stated.

The initiative is part of the Town's Urban Forest Strategy, which aims to ensure every available verge across Cambridge is utilised to its full potential, promoting a greener and more sustainable environment. The strategic approach includes engaging with residents to select appropriate tree species and optimal planting locations to minimise impact on existing infrastructure.

“Our urban forest is vital for enhancing our streetscapes and providing necessary habitats for local wildlife,” Mayor Mack added. “It also plays a critical role in reducing urban heat and improving air quality, making Cambridge a more liveable Town.”

As part of the tree planting program, all suitable locations across the Town have been identified and allocated. Residents of properties eligible for a verge tree have been contacted, and the Town’s tree team has been meticulously planning to ensure the new additions will bring the most benefit with minimal disruption.

The project is set to commence in May 2024, and the community is encouraged to get involved. “We are working closely with our residents to ensure that each tree planted contributes positively to our community's landscape,” Mayor Mack concluded. “Together, we can make Cambridge a greener, more vibrant place to live.”

This initiative not only addresses the immediate environmental needs but also ensures the long-term sustainability of Cambridge, securing a greener future for generations to come. To request a verge tree or to suggest a location that needs shade in a street or reserve, click here.
