Have your say on Council's Public Street Lighting policy

Published on 17 May 2024

Residents are encouraged to have their say on two Gannawarra Shire Council documents that will guide the design, installation, and management of public street lighting within the municipality.

Council’s draft Public Street Lighting policy and accompanying Public Street Lighting procedure have been written to ensure Council’s management of these assets are reflective of current practice.

“Council officers identified the need to develop a policy that addresses public lighting after ambiguities in the decision-making process in relation to new lighting design and installation were identified,” Mayor Ross Stanton said.

“Council does not own most street lighting infrastructure and, in accordance with negotiated agreements, pays for electricity, installation, maintenance, and replacement of items as part of its ongoing responsibility of providing infrastructure and amenities to the community.”

The draft Public Street Lighting policy and procedure addresses matters relating to:

Lighting asset ownership, classification, and the entities responsible for management; Lighting installations for the new and existing streets and public spaces; Determining the need for lighting; and The requests/complaints resolution procedures for frequently reoccurring concern types.
