Celebrating National Volunteer Week: Micro Grant Recipients Announced

Published on 20 May 2024

National Volunteer Week (20th – 26th May) is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering. The 2024 theme ‘Something for Everyone’ is an invitation to explore the rich diversity of opportunities available, demonstrating that there’s a place for everyone in the world of volunteering. If you are passionate about environmental causes, community outreach, history, education, sports or anything else, there is a place where your individual talents and passions can thrive.

Federation Council Mayor, Cr Patrick Bourke said, “Council would like to acknowledge the hardworking volunteers of the Federation region who serve our community. Council is fortunate to be directly supported by 19 Section 355 Committees as well as 10 Advisory Committees, the Youth Council and individual volunteers across departments such as libraries, cemeteries, art galleries and tourism.”

“To celebrate National Volunteer Week, Federation Council offered twenty grants of $250 to not-for-profits, 355 committees, clubs and local community groups, organisations or schools with a volunteer branch or committee, to assist with commemorating and appreciating their volunteers' contributions. The Micro Grants are funding a range of gratitude celebrations that are projected to benefit over 300 volunteers, with events such as afternoon teas, award presentations, outings, luncheons, barbeques, and training and development.”

“The Micro Grants are supporting groups from varied sectors right across the Federation region. These celebratory events may be a great opportunity to get in touch and meet up with your local community volunteer groups to understand the work they do. National Volunteer Week is the perfect occasion to take the first steps towards volunteering and making a positive impact within your community,” he said.

The impact volunteers have on their communities cannot be understated, as shown in the Australian Bureau of Statistic’s 2020 General Social Survey which revealed that one quarter (25%) of Australians aged 15 years and over participated in unpaid voluntary work through an organisation in 2020, contributing 489.5 million hours to the Nation over a 12-month period.
