Kenrick Street Park will now be called "Pyramid Parklands Gujura" following community consultation and collaboration with the Traditional Owners.
The decision to rename the park is part of the Kenrick Street Park Masterplan, a transformative project designed to create a destination park that will serve the growing Gordonvale community.
The park, which spans three separate parcels of land between Dempsey Street and Fischer Road, will undergo significant improvements to boost the lifestyle for residents west of the Bruce Highway.
Community consultation held earlier this year revealed a strong preference for the name "Pyramid Parklands," reflecting the iconic Walsh’s Pyramid that towers over Gordonvale and symbolises the community's connection to the natural landscape.
Additionally, the Traditional Owners suggested incorporating "Gujura," a term that refers to the leafy bushy plants that will feature in the park's new landscaping.
The combined name, "Pyramid Parklands Gujura," honours the local community's input and the cultural heritage of the area, aligning with the Council's Naming of Community Infrastructure Policy.
Stage 1 of the Masterplan redevelopment is jointly funded by Council and the Queensland Government, which committed $3 million to the project last year.
Construction of Stage 1 redevelopment is expected to be completed in December 2024, weather permitting.
A separate park north of Draper Road has also been renamed Straguszi Park, in honour of the family who first settled the land, cultivated it for cane farming for four generations, and are now developing it for residential lots.
