Are you ready to be part of Generation Restoration?
In recognition of World Environment Day, Wyndham City is hosting a free screening of Rachel’s Farm on Friday 7 June from 6pm at Encore Events Centre, 80 Derrimut Road, Hoppers Crossing.
The documentary follows film director and actress Rachel Ward as she learns about the ecological impacts of conventional farming practices, and her transition to a regenerative farming approach.
The screening will be followed by light refreshments and a panel discussion with local garden experts, farmers and Council staff about sustainable land use practices, community gardening, how we can support regenerative farmers, and the benefits of native grasses in farming.
Wyndham City’s Climate Futures and Environment portfolio holder, Councillor Robert Szatkowski, said the documentary screening supported this year’s World Environment Day theme of land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.
“World Environment Day is a time to encourage worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment, and is this year employing the hashtag #GenerationRestoration,” Cr Szatkowski said.
“All over the world, ecosystems are threatened – from forests and drylands to farmlands and lakes, natural spaces on which humanity’s existence depends are reaching a tipping point.”
“Wyndham City is committed to ensuring our community bounces back, adapts, survives and thrives in the face of potential future events such as climate change, extreme weather, natural disasters and more through our Resilient Wyndham Strategy 2021-25.”
“Through Council’s Land Protection Grant Scheme, we’ve established partnerships with 55 farmers and land managers across 59 properties in rural Wyndham.”
“These partnerships deliver weed control across 330 hectares, planted over 11,000 native grasses and planned burns in over three hectares of land just this year alone.”
“These are important landscape works to contain the spread of weeds and support the regeneration of our grasslands.”
“Meanwhile, our Green Living Series offers a wide range of sustainable living workshops and events, aimed at building skills and providing tips to live a little greener.”
