Self-taught Darling Downs artist Kerry Harvey is exploring the nuances of light and shade in his first solo exhibition, Shadows and Reflections, which will be on display at Crows Nest Gallery from May 29 to June 23, 2024.
Shadows and Reflections is a collection of paintings that celebrates the drama of shadows and reflections, the colours of sunrise and sunset and the ever-changing effect of light and colour on coastal, rural and river scenes.
Inspired by the colours of nature, this exhibition captures moments in time when the artist’s breath was literally taken away by the colours, changes of light and shade and the reflections of light and colour on bodies of water, be it the ocean, rivers, dams or lakes.
The exhibition seeks to provide inspiration and appreciation for the natural beauty of our surroundings and asks the viewer to slow down and find beauty in the everyday.
A self-taught artist, Kerry Harvey completed a commercial art/signwriting and lettering course and painted into his early 20's.
Apart from the occasional sketch or poster, his urge to paint was replaced by work, sport and raising a family.
Four years ago, Kerry was challenged to a ‘paint off’ by his eldest daughter. Despite a break of some 40 years, he was surprised at how quickly his painting ability and interest returned.
Kerry found new inspiration for his work after moving to the Darling Downs from New South Wales. It rekindled his desire to both appreciate and capture the range of colours and nuances of light and shade at sunrise and sunset.
His works strive to capture light and shade within the landscape in a style which has accuracy, but which is not photographic.
The exhibition’s Artist in Conversation event starts at 11am on Sunday, June 2, 2024. This is a free event, with no bookings required.
