Green living just got better with the annual olive oil pressing event, Olives to Oil, coming to Wyndham!
Wyndham City’s Climate Futures and Environment portfolio holder, Cr Robert Szatkowski, said this was a great community harvesting initiative.
“Locals are brought together to harvest unused olives from neighbourhood trees as part of this initiative,” he said.
“The olives are dropped off at collection points, later pressed into oil and given back to people who contribute to the harvest the following month.”
“It’s a winning community project on so many levels – it prevents waste, supports edible gardens and celebrates the importance of local food that is tied to the strong Mediterranean agriculture and migration history in the west.”
The initiative is delivered in partnership with CERES, My Smart Garden and the cities of Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Wyndham – the initiative is only open to those living in these areas.
Olive oil is pressed for free for those batches under 20kg. Tickets are essential for those who’d like to participate, and olives can be dropped off at:
Sunday 2 June at Werribee Park Community Farm
The olives will be pressed and available for pick up on Sunday 23 June, at Werribee Park Community Farm, celebrations will be held on the day.
