Media Release – Council to hold Accessibility and Inclusion Roundtable for Central Coast community.
Central Coast Council 27 May 2024

To help raise awareness surrounding the needs of people living with disability, Central Coast Council’s Access and Inclusion Working group invites the media and members of the Central Coast community to attend an Accessibility and Inclusion Roundtable event.

When: Thursday, 6 June 2024, 6.00pm – 7.30pm, with drinks to follow.

Where:  Ulverstone Sports and Leisure Centre, Flora Street, Ulverstone.

The Central Coast Council (the Council) has a vision to create a more accessible and inclusive environment for the community. To achieve this, the Council formed an Access and Inclusion Working Group in 2023.

The Working Group is made up of people living with disability, as well as those with experience advocating for or assisting people with disability. The aim of the Working Group has been to oversee the implementation of Council’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (the Plan), which identified that shop access in the central business district (CBD) is an ongoing issue.

Some of the problems people living with disability or mobility challenges experience when accessing the Central Coast CBDs include blocked entrances, narrow store aisles, and signs blocking the footpath.

The roundtable event will facilitate a discussion between businesses in Ulverstone and Penguin, the Access and Inclusion Working Group, and members of the community with lived experience.

Cr Cheryl Fuller – Mayor Central Coast Council said:

“The Council welcomes business owners and those who live, work or play in the Central Coast to attend this Roundtable event and provide feedback. It is important that we make plans for the future and involve those with lived experience in the decision-making.”
