This week AlburyCity Council voted to accept the Wodonga company’s $2.6 million tender, one of six submissions for the upgrade project.
The works will see the partial demolition and refurbishment of the existing facilities at Sarvaas Park, along with the construction of a new pavilion to house a relocated canteen, separate changerooms to accommodate male and female participation, storage facilities, and a community room.
The existing building will accommodate upgraded gender-neutral public toilets and referee change rooms.
Sarvaas Park is the home of the Albury Thunder Junior Rugby League Club, which has had significant input into the building design process.
The upgrade is a key pillar of the Sarvaas Park Master Plan, which underwent extensive community engagement before being endorsed by Council in 2022.
Council’s Service Leader City Landscapes, David Costello, said the master plan had identified that the existing Sarvaas Park amenities did not meet the needs of the sporting groups that used the grounds.
“The upgrades will address the shortfall in change rooms to meet the growing male and female participation demands, as well as meeting the current and future needs of the Albury Thunder juniors and other users of the grounds,” he said.
“With increasing participation in sport across the region and young females showing interest in becoming involved in rugby league, the new pavilion will create an exciting new home for the club that meets their growing needs.”
The project cost will be met thanks to $350,000 from the NSW Government, a $250,000 commitment from the Australian Government and a $50,000 donation from the Albury Thunder Junior Rugby League Club, with the balance of funds to be contributed by AlburyCity.
Works are expected to take 10 months to complete and will take place during 2024/25.
