The Free Green Waste Weekend held on 25-26 May 2024, at the Benalla Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre was a successful community initiative aimed at promoting responsible waste disposal.
The initiative provided an opportunity for residents and ratepayers to dispose of their green waste, including lawn clippings, branches, garden prunings, and raw timber offcuts, at no cost. It not only facilitated proper waste management but also encouraged environmentally friendly practices among the local community.
Participants were allowed to bring one load of green waste, up to 300kg, for free disposal. The turnout was impressive, with the Recourse Recovery Centre receiving a total of 191.25 cubic meters of green waste, which equates to approximately 38.25 tons. This substantial collection underscores the community's commitment to maintaining a clean and sustainable environment.
The collected green waste did not go to waste; instead, it was mulched and repurposed for environmental benefits. The mulch produced from the green waste is used at the Benalla Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre for erosion prevention and to promote grass growth.
Mayor Cr Danny Claridge said this effort not only helps in maintaining the facility but also contributes to broader environmental conservation goals by reducing soil erosion and enhancing greenery.
“Overall, the Free Green Waste Weekend was a commendable effort in fostering community participation in sustainable practices and effective waste management,” Cr Claridge said.
“By providing a convenient and cost-free way to dispose of green waste, the initiative has helped reduce landfill waste while supporting ecological initiatives at the Resource Recovery Centre.”
