Greenmount’s Waste Management Facility will re-open to the public from Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

Toowoomba Regional Council Waste Services Councillor, Cr Melissa Taylor, said the rehabilitation of the site’s former landfill had been completed, allowing Council to finalise construction of the temporary waste transfer station.

“The Joe Wagner Group recently completed landfill rehabilitation works, involving excavating and consolidating decades of previously buried waste at the site into a managed cell,” Cr Taylor said.

“Using material sourced from the site, the new cell was constructed with a phytocap layer to isolate the deposited waste from the surrounding environment and has been planted with natural bush flora. This was the first major landfill rehabilitation of this type in our Region.

“This has resulted in the closure of the landfill element of the waste facility. Constructing the temporary waste transfer station at Greenmount aligns with Council’s Waste Strategy 2021 and Waste Infrastructure Plan 2020, which aim to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill and offer improved recycling opportunities.

“Transfer facilities reduce the need for regional landfills, ensuring better environmental outcomes for the community. Plans for an upgraded waste management facility at Greenmount will be progressed in line with future Budget priorities.

“In accordance with Queensland Government policy, Council is working towards a society where 90% of waste is diverted from landfill through waste avoidance, reuse and recycling by 2050.

"The new facility will be a much cleaner operation with waste stored in designated areas and in bins, before it is transported to offsite locations for recycling and recovery.

“Customers visiting the site can segregate their waste at different areas for bulk materials (such as concrete, steel and green waste), in the resource recovery area or the residual waste area.”

Greenmount Waste Management Facility opening hours: Monday to Friday 9am-5pm; Saturday and Sunday 10am-5pm.

From June 17, the Clifton Waste Management Facility will revert to its original operating hours of: Monday and Friday 1-5pm; Wednesday 8am to noon; Saturday and Sunday 10am-3pm.
