Fremantle Council preparing to transition to a new waste management model
City of Fremantle 4 Jun 2024

The City of Fremantle will give formal notice to the Resource Recovery Group (RRG) of its intention to withdraw as a member and project participant effective 1 July 2025.

The City of Fremantle has been working with other member Councils to undertake a review of the Regional Resource Recovery Centre (RRRC) site in Canning Vale and assessing opportunities for a new and more cost-effective service model.

If necessary, the CEO of the City may extend RRG membership beyond 1 July 2025, to ensure service continuity during a formal transition period.

The City will report to Council a clear plan of action for its waste disposal arrangements by the end of this calendar year.

Fremantle Mayor Hannah Fitzhardinge said residents will not notice any change to the City’s waste, recycling and FOGO bin collection services.

“Fremantle has a proud history of being one of the first Councils in WA to introduce the 3-bin system. The RRG has provided a fantastic service over the years, consistently exceeding performance targets for landfill diversion and recycling.

“However, the market is now changing and for the service remain financially viable, we have to consider our options to transition to a new model that addresses our waste service requirements in the future,” Mayor Fitzhardinge said.

Fremantle’s decision follows the notice of withdrawal of the Town of East Fremantle, which is effective from the 30 June 2024, and also the City of Melville, whose notice becomes effective on 1 July 2025.

The City of Fremantle assures residents that it is committed to maintaining business-as-usual operations throughout this transition period.
