Celebrating NAIDOC Week in the City of Wanneroo

NAIDOC Week (7-14 July) is a time for all Australians to learn about Australia’s First Nations peoples and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.
This year’s theme is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud. It honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations cultures – with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The City of Wanneroo is proud of its Whadjuk Noongar heritage, and we encourage our community to get involved in NAIDOC Week 2024 celebrations with a variety of free activities on offer.
On Friday 28 June, a formal flag raising ceremony will be held in the City’s Civic Centre in Wanneroo, as symbol of respect and appreciation for local Aboriginal heritage, culture and community. The event will feature a Welcome to Country by Aboriginal Elder Vaughn McGuire and a special dance performance by Clontarf Program students from Girrawheen Senior High School.
During NAIDOC Week, the community can visit the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre to see a collection of Noongar photographer Cole Baxter’s images on display, attend a Noongar Storytime session, or take part in a yarning and planting session in Yanchep.
This month, the City is also launching Welcome to Country, a new exhibition at Wanneroo Regional Museum focused on celebrating and elevating Noongar voices, culture and creativity.
Featuring video interviews and artworks, the display tells stories from the Dreaming, the Gnangara Community, truth telling and more.
