Since adopting the Bassendean Town Centre Masterplan in November 2021, the Town of Bassendean has been actively working to increase the supply of housing stock in collaboration with the state government. In September 2022, the Town transferred the management of Crown Reserve (3353 m²) at 1 Park Lane, currently the Wilson Street Car Park, to the state government for redevelopment into high-density housing.
Bassendean Mayor Kathryn Hamilton emphasised, "The Park Lane lot in Bassendean is ideally located in close proximity to established facilities with excellent amenities, making the site far superior to greenfield areas on the Ellenbrook METRONET line. The Town has clearly demonstrated its aspirations to fast-track high-density development of the site by relinquishing control of the Crown Reserve to the state government. This is an opportunity to prioritise a development that will deliver multiple benefits regarding state and federal government housing targets, in a stunningly superior location.”
In the 2024-25 budget, the federal government allocated an additional $1 billion to states and territories to facilitate new housing developments. This funding builds on the $500 million already committed through the Housing Support Program (HSP), which is part of a broader strategy to achieve the National Housing Accord's target of building 1.2 million new, well-located homes over five years starting from July 1, 2024.
Premier Roger Cook announced an additional $400 million in the 2024/25 budget to expand the Social and Affordable Housing Investment Fund (SAHIF), supporting the delivery and refurbishment of social housing stock. Premier Cook said, "The expansion of the SAHIF will also help support a pipeline of affordable multi-residential housing across priority sites, including METRONET precincts, by partnering with the Commonwealth through Housing Australia and the community housing sector."
The Town is aware that the relinquished Park Lane property is under consideration for federal and state Housing Support funding and urgently requests that this site be given priority status.
