Toowoomba Region artist David Carson’s abstract and enhanced photographic images will be displayed at Goombungee’s Rosalie Gallery from June 26 to July 21, 2024.
David’s exhibition, Today Is My Moment, provides an insight into why ‘today is his moment’, with diverse images in an abstract form and enhanced photographic images taken from the natural world and portraiture.
The exhibition is an expression of his gratitude for the chance to share his unique works and be involved with the community after recently moving to the area.
Having been denied an opportunity to learn an expressive art form while younger, David has seized his chance in retirement to experiment with how visual art could be produced digitally from photographs he had taken and from his own ideas.
David was encouraged to participate in an annual competition by an art gallery in his former town, giving him the confidence to continue developing his practice.
As an Octogenarian, David wanted to keep his imagination stimulated to prove that an old dog can learn new tricks, plus give himself a measure of pleasure and satisfaction during retirement.
“I have always been interested in nature, birds in particular. This interest directs my photographic and artistic output,” David explained.
“While living in St George I took tourists on bird watching walks on behalf of the local Council.
“In 2021, I was invited to mount an exhibition at the Surat Gallery after participating in their photographic competition for several years.
“I do not adhere to a particular genre, but lately I have used birds in several of my compositions. I keep a record of the birds I see in our local area and find inspiration in their form, antics and beauty.”
David’s interest in birds extends to contributing observations and images of local birds to an American University as a citizen scientist and participating in their bi-annual bird count.
The exhibition’s Meet the Artist event runs from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday, June 29. This is a free event, with no bookings required.
