Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) today (June 18) endorsed a $40,000 sponsorship to help stage the third International Street Fiesta in Toowoomba’s Queens Park on Saturday, October 26, 2024.
Toowoomba Region Mayor Geoff McDonald said Council was pleased to continue its support for the Fiesta, which previously had been staged as the Toowoomba Languages and Cultures Festival.
“This week is National Refugee Week and I see great merit in continuing our primary support for the festival, which is organised under the banner of the Toowoomba International Multicultural Society (TIMS) and its various sponsors and supporters,” Mayor McDonald said.
“The Fiesta continues to showcase our Region’s rich cultural composition.
“Our Region is a Refugee Welcome Zone and events like the Fiesta offer new and existing groups a chance to share their music, dance and food with the wider community.
“Toowoomba has been built on the skills of people from many different backgrounds across its history and we continue to see this evolve with new arrivals making a contribution to our community.”
TRC Community Development, Facilities and Tourism portfolio spokesperson Cr James O’Shea said the Fiesta added great value to the Region’s events calendar.
“The Fiesta celebrates the different nationalities that are represented across our Region and last year attracted international visitors and other attendees from outside our Region,” Cr O’Shea said.
“The event is our signature multicultural festival. It is an energetic and colourful display of music, dance and food for families to enjoy and a great way to meet new groups settling in our community or see more established performance groups.”
Information about food and stall applications and how to volunteer will be published at a future date on the festival website, www.tlcfestival.com.au
The event is supported by the Queensland Government through Multicultural Affairs Queensland, Multicultural Australia and the University of Southern Queensland, among other supporters.
The funding was approved at the June Ordinary Meeting of Council.
