Kerang CBD Redevelopment nearing completion

Work to transform Kerang’s central business district is on track for completion by early August.

As part of Stages 3 and 4 of the Kerang CBD Redevelopment, work has been occurring during the past two months to rejuvenate Wellington Street between Nolan and Albert streets, building on improvements to Victoria Street between Scoresby and Wellington streets that were completed earlier this year.

“The Kerang CBD Redevelopment is achieving its goal of providing spaces that are appealing for visitors to the Gannawarra’s largest business area, with business owners and shoppers embracing the improved paving, additional seating areas and new garden beds,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

“These improvements would not be possible without support from higher levels of government; in this instance the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, which is fully funding these works.”

One of the major features of the redevelopment will be completed next week – the installation of new lighting around the Karlie McDonald memorial clock, located in the middle of the intersection of Victoria and Wellington Streets.

As part of these works, traffic restrictions will be in place during Wednesday, 26 June to enable safe work conditions, with motorists advised to divert via Fitzroy, Scoresby and Albert streets to avoid the roundabout.

“This lighting will illuminate this iconic structure, which honours the former Kerang High School teacher who died in 1927 whilst saving three students from drowning in the Loddon River,” Mr Rollinson said.

Work to install new paving along Fitzroy Street between Scoresby and Wellington streets will occur from early July, with similar improvements outside Walkers IGA in Victoria Street scheduled to be completed by August 2024.

“Shoppers and business owners are advised that pedestrian access around work sites will be diverted whilst these improvements occur, however Council will endeavour to keep these disruptions to the shortest possible time period,” Mr Rollinson said.

“Council thanks shoppers and business owners for their understanding as these improvements occur.”
